A Quick Guide to 11 Common Plastic Surgery Procedures

In today’s world of influencers and celebrities, plastic surgery is a much-talked-about topic. Gone are the days when it was the privilege of only movie stars, today, even a common person can go under the knife to obtain their desired look. From breast lift to liposuction – the world of plastic surgery has evolved over the years and is now safer than ever.

Let’s take a look at the 11 plastic surgery procedures most common in Malaysia, and understand the purpose of each of them.

Liposuction

One of the most common procedures, excess fat is sucked out of different body parts through liposuction. Fat cells are permanently removed from the body, thus altering the structure of the body altogether. It is most commonly used on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, chin, neck, arms, calves and back.

The main benefit of liposuction is mostly aesthetic, rather than improving one’s health. It works best on people with good skin elasticity and skin tone as the skin can mould itself into new contours achieved through liposuction. For people with a lack of skin elasticity, liposuction may lead to loose skin in areas from where the procedure has been performed.

Rhinoplasty

Commonly known as a nose job, Rhinoplasty alters the size, shape and proportion of the nose. While the most common perception is that Rhinoplasty is done to make one look prettier, it is also done to repair any damage to the nose or correct congenital defects.

Our nose consists of the main bone, cartilage and skin. Through Rhinoplasty, any of these three can be altered. This procedure is done using general anaesthesia.

Breast Augmentation, Breast Reduction, Breast Asymmetry Correction

Well, this one’s a no-brainer, one of the most sought-after plastic surgery procedures involves operating on the breast. Through this procedure, the size of the breast is altered.

Breast augmentation is increasing the size and shape of the breast by using silicone or saline implants. While this is commonly chosen by people who are unhappy with the size of their breasts, it is also used by breast cancer patients who have gone through mastectomy or lumpectomy, as reconstructive surgery.

Decreasing the size of the breast by removing excess breast tissue, fat or skin is known as breast reduction. This is usually done to reduce discomfort such as shoulder and back pain, neck pain, skin irritation and others. Breast asymmetry correction is done to correct the difference in size or shape between two breasts. This is usually done when the difference is major.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that is used to correct abnormalities of the ear such as protruding ears, misshapen ears or very large ears. It is also used to repair any damage caused to the appearance of ears due to traumatic incidents.

It is important to note that otoplasty is used to correct the appearance of ears and not address hearing-related issues.

Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is done to improve or refine the bone contour of the chin area. The procedure involves placing implants directly into the bone of the chin, below the skin. An underprojected or underdeveloped chin can be augmented using this procedure.

The main goal of chin augmentation is to restore facial harmony. Fun fact – the size of the chin is related to the size of the nose. Thus, a large nose may look more noticeable due to a small chin and vice versa. Hence, chin augmentation and rhinoplasty are often done together.

Facelift

A facelift or rhytidectomy is done to improve the appearance of the face and neck. This is usually performed to address signs of ageing such as wrinkles, sagging skin and loss of facial volume.

This procedure is performed using general anaesthesia and can take several hours to complete. Patients require several days to a week to recover during which they may experience bruising, swelling and discomfort.

Eyelid Surgery

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is done to address issues related to the eyelids caused due to age-related factors, lifestyle factors or genetics such as sagging or drooping skin, puffiness and wrinkles.

Incisions are made into the natural creases of the eyelid during eyelid surgery. Excess skin, muscles and fat are removed through these incisions to achieve a more refreshed appearance. This is a minor surgery done under local anaesthesia or light sedation. However, it may take several hours to complete.

Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is performed to tone or tighten the abdominal area to address issues such as excess fat deposits, loose skin or weak abdominal muscles caused due to pregnancy, ageing or weight change.

A tummy tuck aims to provide a youthful and toned appearance. Recovery might take several days to a week.

Gynecomastia Surgery

The overdevelopment of the breast tissue in boys or men is known as gynecomastia. The breasts may grow unevenly or become larger.

While gynecomastia is most common in teenage boys going through puberty, it can happen to men of any age.

Brow Lift

A brow lift or browplasty is similar to a facelift. It pulls the skin of the forehead, making it tighter, to remove wrinkles or smooth creases. This procedure can address issues such as hooded eyelids, drooping eyebrows, frown lines or furrowed foreheads.

People undergoing browplasty can resume their daily life within 10 days of surgery. However, recovery can take longer if browplasty is combined with other facial surgeries.

Lip Augmentation

The purpose of this cosmetic procedure is to obtain plumper or fuller lips. In most cases, this is achieved by injecting a dermal filler similar to hyaluronic acid into the lips.

Other types of lip augmentation surgery include lip fillers, fat grafting, tissue grafting, lip lifts and lip implants.

Enhancing Beauty Responsibly

While plastic surgery involves certain risks, the benefits far outweigh them. Plastic surgery can provide you with a better quality of life and enhance your body image and self-esteem. It can help you obtain a more youthful and natural appearance and provide relief from pain.

If you’ve been thinking of going under the knife, speak to an experienced plastic surgeon. A good plastic surgeon can help you achieve your desired outcome while undertaking minimal risk.
