On the 21st of January, we at Avisena, organised a Sustainability and Community Engagement Program in collaboration with the Indigenous Community of Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat, Selangor. The area is home to approximately 194 families comprising 608 members of the indigenous Mah Meri community.
Through the Avisena Foundation, our Corporate Social Responsibility arm, we worked with the indigenous community of Pantai Cunang, Tanjung Sepat and conducted a program aimed at fostering environmental consciousness and community welfare among Avisena’s workforce.
The primary objectives of this program were to raise awareness among our staff about the importance of environmental conservation, particularly in coastal areas that have the potential to accumulate waste. Additionally, Avisena provided health check-ups to the Pantai Cunang community to increase awareness about the importance of healthcare among the residents.
This CSR initiative underscores our commitment to social responsibility and sustainable practices and aligns with our core values of contributing positively to both the environment and the communities we serve. The program reflects Avisena’s dedication to making a meaningful impact on the well-being of our Orang Asli communities and aims to foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment among our team and the community at large.
The event was organized on a beautiful Sunday morning, from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and was an excellent opportunity for our team to connect with the local community. The event was designed to be a collaborative effort between our team and the community members.
The event started with a warm welcome speech by the representatives of Pantai Cunang. The welcome address was followed by a donation ceremony for the Orang Asli community. We also had the privilege of witnessing a cultural performance by the Mah Meri tribe, which was a highlight of the day. The performance was a true reflection of their rich culture and heritage, and it was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about their traditions.
A hearty breakfast gave everyone a chance to recharge and connect over some delicious food. Following breakfast, we participated in a beach cleaning and beautification activity, which was Avisena’s opportunity to give back to the environment. We also had a health screening session by Klinik Bergerak Sutera (KBS), through which we aimed to provide healthcare information to the community and engage the people to learn more about their health and get advice from healthcare professionals in an informal setting.
The event proceeded with an exciting sports and games session that brought the visitors and the Orang Asli together in a series of activities and friendly contests. In addition, we had the opportunity to discover the art of handicraft making from the Orang Asli, using natural and recycled materials, which made the experience more unique and memorable. The event was wrapped up with a prize-giving ceremony, recognizing the participants’ effort and commitment, followed by a delectable lunch.
As we bid farewell to our newfound friends at Pantai Cunang, we were left with a sense of fulfilment and enrichment from the cultural exchange and the wonderful memories created.
The CSR event held at Pantai Cunang left a lasting and profound impression on us. The event was an opportunity to learn from the Orang Asli who shared their knowledge, cultural practices, and customs. Through the event, we also aimed to raise awareness and appreciation for the Orang Asli, who are often marginalised and neglected in society. We hope to return to Pantai Cunang to continue our support for our indigenous communities and to learn more from them.
Overall, the event was an enormous success, and we were thrilled to be a part of it. It was a fantastic opportunity for our team to connect with the local community, give back to society, and make a positive impact on the environment. We look forward to organising and being a part of more such events in the future.
